28. St. Patrick's Day

Kept on a necklace
woven of particolored

string, the saint's charms
jangled a resonance

the reptiles sensed
their entire length,

achieving without effort what
Frost, in “To Earthward,”

longs for, or claims to:
Total feeling.

Time has trimmed the capacity.
Green beer, green skirts

some inches above the knee,
spontaneous jigging—

these bring a smile
to the aged poet,

sipping his chicory
in the corner. When young,

the sight of a woman
wearing a plastic, buckled hat

thrummed through his unlined skin,
taking him

straight into the sea.
